HEAD START

Head Start is a federally funded program for low-income children aged three to five and their families.  Head Start provides a developmentally appropriate learning environment  for the children and a supportive atmosphere for the parents.

Recognizing that the parents are a child’s first teacher, Head Start works with the parent to empower the parent for a life long role in the child’s maturation process.

Head Start works with families in three performance areas.  The areas are as follows:

·        Child Development and Health Services include the core areas of

Prevention and Early Intervention, Individualization, Disabilities, and

      Curriculum.

·        Child Nutrition includes the core areas of Physical Growth, Nutrition

History, Tooth brushing, Food Variety, Parent Education, and

      Classroom Activities.

·        Literacy includes the core areas of Reading is Fundamental,

Continuing Education for Parents, and development of Pre-literacy

Skills in the Children.

·        Family and Community Partnerships include the core areas of Family

Partnership Building, Parent Involvement, and Community

Partnerships.

·        Program Design and Management include the core areas of

Eligibility, Recruitment, Selection Enrollment, and Attendance and

Facilities, and
Materials and Equipment.

The management of Head Start reaches beyond the program and into the operation of the agency itself. Although the agency’s Board of Directors is legally responsible for the operation of Head Start, the governance of the program is shared between the Head Start Policy Council and the agency’s Board of Directors. This shared governance allows parents and community representatives to contribute ideas and information for program improvement to the Board of Directors.
